I have done my best to provide everyone with the most notice possible for any events that we are either holding or partcipating in.  Some details of the above events are as follows:

PROJECT RED RIBBON/ R.I.D.E Launch:
This is an ANNUAL event that we as a chapter work very closely with the HOST Police service, which this year we are honoured to have is BARRIE CITY POLICE.  The details and final date of this event are  still to be determined.  This is one of our larger events and we will need as much assistance as possible for this to be a success.  Planning will be starting at the October meeting (if possible.)

RED RIBBON BOX DISTRIBUTION: - NOVEMBER MEETING
This project should be one of the Chapters largest fundraiser activities and is recognized across the Country as a Unique MADD function.  ALL Board members will be expected to accept the responsibility of ensuring that as many RED RIBBON Boxes get out and are maintained as possible.  Also any and all other volunteers that are able to help out with this would be VERY MUCH appreciated.  This avenue for fundraising is becoming more and more important as funding at the National Level slowly declines over the coming years.  100% of the monies raised from this goto the Chapter!

MULTI-MEDIA EVENT - BANTING MEMORIAL HS - NOV 27 8:15 am
This is the first time we will be holding an event like this.  This years Multi-medial is D.O.A. and will be shown for the first time in SImcoe County on Nov 27th for 2 shows starting at 8:30 (I think).  This event will have over 500 Grade 8 students bussed in from surrounding scholls to take part in viewing the 2008-2009 Multi-media presentation.  Also special to this event is that we will have 2 of the actors from D.O.A. in attendace at the schoold to speak to their experiences.  This event is in conjunction with the Nottawasaga OPP C.S.O. Officer Medody Tourigny.  Many thanks to her for her unending support and work on making this event happen.  We have been working on putting this event together since beofre the summer and we would love to see as many of you there as possible.

LICK IMPAIRED DRIVING - Nottawasaga Inn - Alliston 11am-1 pm
Thsi event is another first for our Chapter and the hard work of Melody Tourigny again from the Nottawasaga OPP.  melody started this initiative (LICK IMPAIRD DRIVING) locally by handing out suckers to highschool students that had a tag on the suckers that said "LICK IMPAIRED DRIVING"  This inititive has grown and is now becoming a leading factor in raising awareness and educating the youth of Simcoe County on the perils of Impaired Driving.  This event will be held at teh Nottawasaga Inn at the CENTER ICE Facility.  It will include displays from numerous community groups as well as free skating on the NHL size ice rink.  There are also various HIGH LEVEL V.I.P's on the invite list whose names will be released upon confirmation of their attendance.  This will also be a large MEDIA event and is being organized by C.S.O. Officer Melody Tourigny of the Nottawasaga OPP and OCCID and our Chapter along with assistance from various other community organizations.  We will also be working closely with the local BOY & GIRL SCOUTS to have pictures drawn by those kids that will then be displayed at this event and possibly handed out during various R.I.D.E Events over the upcoming Festive R.I.D.E. Season.

I thank you all in advance for your participation in the above mentione events and as always for your continued assistance in the FIGHT TO END IMPARED DRIVING in Simcoe County and across the Country.

Citizens enlisted in fight for safe roads; Campaign will urge motorists to call 911 on drunk drivers

Posted By Courtney Whalen

Posted 29 days ago

One might say it's a sign of the times.

The County of Simcoe will begin encouraging motorists to report suspected impaired drivers with the launch of the "Safe Roads... Your Call" campaign.

A partnership between the county, the Barrie/Simcoe chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), RIDE 24/7 and area police, the program will involve 150 signs being posted on county roads.

MADD Barrie/Simcoe pre- sident Jason Larkin said while the program should see active participation from the public, the signs will also serve as a warning to impaired drivers.

"They'll know it's not just the police looking for them; it's also the guy in the car next to you, the family in the car behind you, and even the tow truck driver," he said.

A similar program started in York Region in June 2007. Since then, York Regional Police have received more than 1,500 calls from citizens, resulting in 200 arrests.

Larkin has seen the results of dialling 911 first-hand. Last weekend, while driving north on Highway 400, he noticed a car ahead of him being driven erratically.

He called 911 and a police officer caught up and pulled the vehicle over. Larkin said the driver was issued a 12-hour licence suspension.

"The more eyes on the road the better," he said of the program.

It's a sentiment echoed by Sgt. Steven Jacobs of Mnjikaning Police Services.

"It is an extremely valuable tool, especially during the summer months when our roads are so busy," he said.

Simcoe County council approved the program at its March 25 meeting. "Everybody is certainly supportive of stopping impaired driving, so it's a good fit for the county," said county communications manager Allan Greenwood.

The county's share of the cost to implement the program will be between $5,000 and $8,000, mostly for the installation of signs. RIDE 24/7 and the Barrie/Simcoe chapter of MADD are also contributing toward the cost of purchasing signs.

Greenwood said the hope is that other municipalities will look at installing signs on local roads, as well.

Signs will start to go up in the next few weeks. The official launch of the program in Simcoe County is set for April 22.

Help pass BILL C-9

We're getting down to our last ditch attempts at helping this Bill to pass. ANYONE can email and make a difference. The support can come from anyone and if the pressure is not there all the efforts of MADD and the Police are in vain if these sentences are allowed to continue. There is nothing more revictimizing to a grieving family than to have some smug criminal walk away knowing he has done the crime but will now sit in the comforts of his own home, enjoying his life, his family with a pitence of restrictions. Our MADD Chapter (in Barrie) gets phone calls and emails from many, complaining about conditional sentences for horrific impaired crimes and wondering how to stop it. This is your opportunity. You can email the following address: leg-jur@sen.parl.gc.ca It is Bill C-9 that is before the standing committee. You state your request for the Senate Committee to pass C-9 ASAP and to be sure violent impaired crimes are part of this legislation Ask that your views be copied and shared with all the Senators of the Committee. Thanking all of you for taking a "moment" to perhaps make a "lifetime" of difference in the violent crime of impaired driving.

Thanks again everyone More information can be found at
