National Survey on Impaired Driving

In June of last year, Goldfarb Consultants released statistics about Canadians’ attitudes on impaired driving and their drinking and driving behaviour. Highlights of the Goldfarb Report 2000 include:

  • 93 % of Canadians are concerned about the number of people who drink and drive. Two in three Canadians are ‘very concerned.’

  • 40 % of Canadians admit to driving their vehicle when they thought they were over the legal limit. More than one in two males (55 %) admitted to driving when they thought they were over the legal limit.

  • 78 % of Canadians personally have known someone who has driven a vehicle when they thought they were over the legal limit.

  • 55 % of Canadians believe Canada’s drinking and driving laws are ‘not tough enough.’ 41% of Canadians believe Canada’s laws are ‘about right.’

  • 63 % of Canadians support a jail sentence of at least 14 days for individuals convicted of drinking and driving for the first time.

  • 66 % support mandatory life-time suspension from driving for individuals convicted of drinking and driving for a second time.

  • 51 % of Canadians support the lowering of the legal limit of BAC and another 21 % neither supports or opposes the measure. Only 16% strongly oppose the lowering of the legal limit of BAC.

  • 82 % of Canadians support the criminal prosecution of drivers who are impaired by drugs such as marijuana or hashish.
