Bruce Francis Ritchie

Home city: Bathurst, New Brunswick
Age: 15
Date of crash: October 10, 1987

Bruce was 15 years old when he was killed on October 10, 1987 in Bathurst, New Brunswick. As he was walking on the side of a road he was hit by a drunk driver who had recently left a bar where he had been drinking for several hours. Bruce died several hours later in a helicopter as he was being transferred to Moncton, New Brunswick. He died among strangers as there was no room for his parents on the helicopter.

We, Bruce’s parents, drove 150 miles to Moncton only to be told that the plane had never reached its destination and that Bruce was dead. Part of us also died as we buried our son on Thanksgiving Day.

The drunk driver who hit Bruce and then fled the scene received a two-week jail sentence and a fine of $2,000 as punishment for the life he had taken. We have lost faith in our so-called judicial system where the accused has more rights than the victim.

Memorial Message

The following message was provided by Bruce’s parents, Glenn and Lorrie, and their family.

Bruce was a nice young man who loved his life, family and friends. We were proud to have been his parents. How very much we miss our son — the heartache never goes away. Eleven years — it was yesterday! Who has the right to take the most beautiful gift — life?

Bruce, the light that was your life will always burn bright in our hearts.

Please spare others this heartache — don’t drink and drive.
