Dr. Shelley Anne Martin
December 15, 1975 ~ May 3, 2007

Shelley Martin was born in Kelowna, BC on Dec. 15, 1975. She moved to Penticton, BC when she was 7 months old and lived there until age 5 with her Mother and brother, Jeff. They then moved to Abbotsford, BC and at the age of 12 Shelley went to Victoria, BC to live with her Father, Terry, and brother, Jeff.

Shelley was an excellent student since kindergarten, winning awards annually, loved school, and helping others. She did much volunteer work. Shelley was also very gifted at crafts and painting.

After graduating from Mt. Doug Secondary (Honors) Shelley obtained her BA (1998) at U. Vic, then her Master’s (Honors, 2001) in English Literature and Creative Writing at Boston’s Emerson College. She then taught English at Kelowna’s Okanagan College for 2 years. The U of Louisiana, Lafayette, offered Shelley a full fellowship, which she accepted, to obtain her PhD in English Literature.

Shelley officially became “Dr. Martin” on April 17th, 2007, after years of hard work. We were all so proud of her. Shelley was eagerly anticipating returning to BC to obtain a teaching position. She was a proud Canadian!

On May 3rd, 2007 she was returning from a taking a visitor on a plantation tour in Baton Rouge, LA at 9:30 p.m., when a drug impaired driver rear ended her vehicle killing her instantly. May 19th her parents accepted her diploma, and hood, at the ULL convocation and a standing ovation was given. It was the first time in the university’s history!

In her memory, and to assist others in their educations, perpetual scholarships have been set up at all the educational institutions where she studied and taught.

Due to donation of her corneas two people now have sight.

Shelley is terribly missed by her Mother, Michele, of Abbotsford, BC, her Father, Terry (Sylvia), and brother, Jeff, of Victoria, BC, and many, many others. She will remain in our hearts forever.
