Kathleen April Ghislaine Dubois

Home city: Guelph, ON
Age: 22
Date of crash: September 23rd, 2001

On Sunday September 23, 2001 Kathleen went out for coffee with her boyfriend and as they turned the corner they were hit head on by a drunk driver. Kathleen was transported to the local hospital to be stabilized and then transferred by air ambulance to Sunnybrook where they operated for hours. She was not breathing on her own, no brain activity, broken hand, pelvis, arm and crushed heel. She was in a coma for 7 days, and the Doctor told us she would not survive, but for some reason she woke up. So her painful recovery started. She had a severe brain injury, she spent 5 months in the hospital and after the rehabilitation started, she had to relearn everything, they told us she would never walk or if she walks it would be with a limp. She worked very hard and now she walks perfectly. She started a life of therapy and disappointment; she lost her job, friends and boyfriend. She tried to go back to school, and now six years have passed and she works as a volunteer but still needs lots of therapy. There is not one day that she doesn’t suffer, but she never complains. Kathleen was a beautiful person, full of life and because of a drunk driver; our daughter’s life is changed forever.

Kathleen is a survivor and the bravest person on earth, and with our love and her determination she will survive.
