Honouring our Spirit – A Program for First Nations and Metis Communities
Honouring Our Spirit is a MADD Canada Victim Services Outreach program for First Nations and Métis victims/survivors of impaired driving. Our program was developed in consultation with First Nations and Métis organizations across Alberta to be culturally sensitive and meet the specific needs of their communities.
Our goal for this program is to become a stronger support system to First Nations and Métis people who require impaired driving victim services by making them more aware of the victim services that MADD Canada offers and helping them feel comfortable asking for any help that might be needed.
The Honouring Our Spirit Program includes:
Video – a 23 minute original movie exploring unresolved trauma and grief in the Aboriginal community. MADD Canada, in partnership with Native Counselling Services of Alberta, traveled across Western Canada to find out how individuals and communities can reach out for support after losing a loved one to impaired driving or suffering life-changing injuries. From the mountainous landscapes of the Sto:Lo First Nation to an Art Studio in Saddle Lake, Alberta, Honouring our Spirit opens up the discussion on healthy grieving and a future where all Spirits soar. The complete movie is available on Youtube. Part One | Part Two | Part Three
Facilitator’s Guide – an 16 page booklet that includes information for teachers, counselors and facilitators on presenting the DVD and facilitating follow-up discussions. Click here to download the guide (PDF).
Brochure – for victims/survivors of impaired driving who are searching for support. It provides information for them on MADD Canada’s victim service programs as well as contact information for the Alberta Victim Services Program. Click here to download the brochure (PDF).
